Your First Session: What to Expect

Most men spend more time worrying about what therapy will be like than it actually takes to do it. Here is what actually happens.

Before You Arrive

Book a free 30 minute consultation first.

You can start with a free 30 minute consultation. No intake forms. No pressure to explain everything perfectly. Just: what is going on, and does this feel like a fit.

This is also where you can get a feel for Umair directly. One therapist. One conversation. One clear next step if you want to keep going.

Who you talk with

You work with Umair directly

This is a solo practice. You are not being matched to a rotating clinic team.

The first conversation is meant to feel clear, practical, and lower pressure than most men expect.

What the First Full Session Looks Like

1

Minutes 0 to 10: Your words, your pace

Umair introduces himself and asks one question: “What made you decide to reach out?” There is no right answer. One word answers are fine. Starting with “I am not sure where to begin” is fine. That is literally what the first ten minutes are for.

2

Minutes 10 to 35: What you are dealing with

Umair will ask about what is going on at work, at home, and in your head. This is not a history taking exercise. They are listening for patterns and figuring out what kind of support would actually help you. You do not have to reveal anything you are not ready to talk about. You set the pace.

3

Minutes 35 to 45: Where to focus

Umair will reflect back what he heard and suggest what might be useful to work on. Not a diagnosis. Not a prescription. A starting point you can push back on or redirect.

4

Minutes 45 to 50: Next steps

You decide together whether to book another session. No pressure either way. Some men book six sessions on the spot. Some men take a week to think about it. Both are fine.

What It Will Not Be Like

We want to be direct about what first sessions at Resolve are not:

  • You will not be asked about your childhood unless you bring it up
  • You will not be told to open up or express feelings on command
  • You will not be judged for what you have been dealing with or how long you waited
  • You will not be pushed faster than you are ready to go
  • You will not be pressured to commit to anything

What It Will Feel Like

Most men describe the first session the same way: “It was easier than I expected.”

The thing men do not expect: it feels less like being in therapy and more like talking to someone who actually gets what you are dealing with. Someone who does not have a stake in the outcome. Someone who has heard it before and is not shocked.

A common reaction is that the first session feels more straightforward and less awkward than they imagined.

Common Questions Before the First Session

Do I need to prepare anything?

No. Show up. That is the whole job.

What if I don't know what to say?

Umair will help you find a starting point. You are not expected to lead the whole session.

What if I start talking and can't stop?

That is fine too. The session is 50 minutes and Umair tracks the time. You do not have to manage anything except showing up.

What if I don't cry? What if I do?

Either is completely normal. Men respond to therapy in every possible way. There is no correct emotional output.

Will you tell anyone what I say?

Everything is confidential. The only exceptions are if you are at risk of harming yourself or someone else, and Umair will explain this clearly at the start.
